Old
slates have been re-used for generations in the Conservation of historic
buildings. In recent years, as more buildings are being LISTED, the
demand for old slates has been such that demand is outstripping supply.
The building
featured on this page is in the award winning village of Aughrim
Co Wicklow. Though it is a new building, it is built in the old
style using reclaimed Killaloe slates, cast iron pillars, pitch
pine, and old windows and doors.
The picture
beneath is an old Killaloe slate headstone erected in 1812 in Castlelough
graveyard near the Slate Quarry. Notice how legible the inscription
is today despite the fact that it is almost 200 years old. Such
is the durability and strength of good quality slate.
The best quality
in second-hand slate is the traditional Heather coloured Blue Bangor,
especially TON slates because they are so thick (....
