Spain is by far the largest producer of natural roofing slates.
Good quality Spanish
slate such as CAMPO will last well over 100 years. It is colour durable
and maintenance free for the life of the building.
Campo slates were
the first Spanish slate we sold and we are still selling them. In our
opinion they are the best from Spain. We are impressed with the personal
attention, which Antonio Campo pays to his business. His production
is Quality assured. His quality is consistent, slates are available
in 24” x 12” and they arrive when promised. We have checked with Distributors
of CAMPO Slates in other Countries and they speak very highly of the
Company.

In
Ireland we are suckers for poor quality imported slates. We are (wrongly)
conditioned into accepting that if a slate is Natural it must be good.
The is, in part, due to the tradition of Blue Bangors in the market.
There are hundreds of producers throughout the world. The reputable
are usually well known, market leaders and members of an Association
of Slate Producers. I remember that the National Federation of Roofing
Contractors in the U.K. saw fit to publish a Bulletin about 15 years
ago outlining the pitfalls with poor quality roofing slates.
We
continuously monitor the Irish slate market. Slaters tell us that they
have had to re-slate roofs, We see slates, which are cross-grained,
riddled with Pyrites, showing “rust” staining or weakness along the
grain, We see slates which have British Standard Test Reports {B S
680} and a Slater cannot cut a Valley without undue waste, When Sales
Agents will not disclose the Name of the producing Quarry, we will not
sell that slate.
